735 Combination Gas-Electric Lanterns
735 Combination Gas-Electric Lanterns
These sconces are transitional fixtures from the years before reliable electricity, at the end of the gas era, but also a hybrid of the craftsman and sheffield styles. Above a glass candle covers what was once the gas flame hardware, now fitted with candleabra socket. Below, is an electric lantern with original pullchain switch inside. You can wire them together, or choose two different circuits, depending on installation. Did you notice the unusual sheffield style backplate?? Usually you’d expect a square plate to go with the square lines of the lantern, but these have a dressed-up plate with a round pipe connecting the two. These were in fairly poor condition when we found them, as if they were in a wet basement for decades! We’ve totally stripped the old tarnish, and done a new rich brown patina with hand rubbed highlights. All the vintage slag glass was missing or broken so it’s been replaced with new “granite cat’s paw” slag which was as close to the original coloring and texture and we could find. These antique sconces have a beautiful warm glow, are a great conversation piece that really makes a statement. These would be a lovely addition to any late Craftsman style home. These beauties are 13” tall (without flame bulb), 5” wide, and protrude 8” from the wall. Los Angeles.
